Hut Skiing: Francie's Cabin(970) 925-5775 1280 Ute Ave Aspen, CO 81611 |
Francie's Cabin, the second structure to be constructed in the Summit Huts Association system, opened in January 1995. This lovely and roomy log shelter sits at treeline in the Crystal Creek drainage. Stunning alpine peaks and colorful sunrises lie just beyond the warmth of the crackling wood stove. Francie's cabin is a memorial to Francis Lockwood Bailey, a Breckenridge resident who died in a plane crash. The hut's design is similar to Janet's Cabin, with a winter sleeping capacity of 20 people and a summer capacity of 14. During the winter, the cabin is accessible via a classic and moderate cross-country trail, although the last mile does climb quite steeply. Once at the cabin skiers are within 100 yards of true alpine terrain and its attendant hazards ? namely, avalanches. Consequently touring around the hut is limited and is only recommended for experienced groups of skiers who have the proper equipment and necessary knowledge for traveling in avalanche country; exercise caution.Francie's Cabin is open during the summer for bikers and hikers and is accessible to people with disabilities, although the approach road is rough and requires a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle. The route to Wheeler Flats Trailhead is also rough and is really only appropriate for summer hikers; it is not recommended for biking or skiing. Also note that the location of Francie's Cabin does not lend itself to true hut-to-hut travel. Make reservations through the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association. BURRO TRAILTRAILHEAD
