Copley Society Of Boston(617) 536-5049 158 Newbury St Ste 158 Boston, MA 02116 |
In contrast to its extravagantly-designed Newbury Street peers, this humble non-profit achieves maximum viewer-impact in a minimal space.ContributorGallery Vibe America's oldest art association (founded in 1879 by students of the first graduating class of Boston's School of the Museum of Fine Arts) has some 700 members worldwide. With two galleries in the building, the society mounts more than 20 exhibitions annually. A discernable "it's about the art, not the scene" vibe prevails over the nonprofit's no-nonsense, bi-level layout. The gallery staff on hand is amicable and accessible. The Society is notable for offering young artists the chance to exhibit in a prime Newbury Street location, alongside their more established peers. This is a good place to see up-and-coming talent before it's snatched away by the street's more commercial venues.
Setting From the street, you enter onto the landing of a staircase between the gallery's two levels. Either level will serve as a starting point; there is no sequence in which to best view the current exhibit. In fact, you might be surprised by the curious juxtapositions resulting from the art's placement.
