Tips
- Volunteer Opportunities
If you're willing and able, Poets House needs help with clerical work, stacking the bookshelves, proofreading and helping at events. A resume and interview are required; references are optional.
For bards and lovers of poetry, this institution is a rare retreat.ContributorThe CollectionThirty-thousand volumes of poetry nestle against each other in a well-lit, airy loft, dotted with comfortable chairs, work tables and even typewriters. The collection is one of the largest in the U.S. open to the public. You are welcome to listen to rare recordings of poets' readings, browse through the extensive collection or write your own composition.
ProgramsThe staff are professional and friendly. For a moderate fee, you can attend one of the regularly scheduled events. "Passwords" is the core program, in which established poets introduce the work of other poets. Poets House also sponsors the "Poetry in the Branches" program, through which it organizes readings in city public libraries. Director Lee Briccetti explains Poets House's philosophy: "We believe that whenever the public has access to poetry, when books are made visible in libraries, the public will make the poetry discovery for itself."
